Squirrel Volunteer Roles

Organisation: Hinckley District Scouts
Role Title: Squirrel Drey Lead Volunteer
Location: Local Scout Group
Time Commitment: Flexible, typically 2-4 hours per week (including meetings and activities)
Responsible to: Group Scout Leader (GSL)

Role Purpose: As a Squirrel Drey Lead Volunteer, you will lead a group of young children (aged 4–6) in fun, safe, and adventurous activities that help them grow, develop, and explore. You will create a welcoming environment where children can make friends, learn new skills, and experience the joy of Scouting. This role involves planning and delivering a wide range of activities that are aligned with Scouts UK’s values and programs, ensuring every child is supported to reach their potential.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the Squirrel Drey, ensuring activities are engaging, inclusive, and age-appropriate for children aged 4–6.
Plan, prepare, and run weekly Drey meetings, which include games, crafts, outdoor activities, and learning opportunities.
Foster an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere for all children and their families, ensuring diversity is respected and celebrated.
Work with a team of volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the Drey and to provide a safe, supportive environment for children.
Act as a role model, demonstrating positive Scouting values and encouraging children’s personal development and confidence.
Liaise with the Group Scout Leader (GSL) and other section leads to ensure the integration of Squirrel Drey into the broader Scout group activities.
Keep accurate records of attendance, activity plans, and progress to support children’s development.
Attend relevant training, meetings, and events to further develop your leadership skills and knowledge of Scouts UK’s programs.

Requirements:

Commitment to Scouts UK’s mission and values, with a passion for working with young children.
Enthusiasm, creativity, and an ability to engage children in fun, interactive activities.
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
A willingness to work as part of a team and collaborate with other volunteers.
Basic knowledge of child safeguarding and safety protocols (training will be provided).
A DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) will be required.

Desirable Skills:

Experience working with young children in an educational, childcare, or youth setting.
Knowledge of Scouts UK or a similar youth organisation.
Strong organisational skills and the ability to plan engaging activities that meet Scouts UK’s program goals.

Responsible to: Squirrel Drey Lead Volunteer

Role Purpose: As a Squirrel Drey Team Volunteer, you will assist in delivering fun, engaging, and age-appropriate activities for young children aged 4-6. You’ll help create a safe and exciting environment where children can play, learn, and explore, while developing their social skills, creativity, and confidence. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with young children and wants to contribute to their growth within a supportive and inclusive setting.

Key Responsibilities:

Support the Squirrel Drey Lead Volunteer in planning and delivering weekly activities, games, and crafts that encourage children’s development.
Assist with setting up and tidying away equipment for sessions, ensuring all activities are safe and well-organized.
Help supervise children during meetings and activities, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment where every child feels valued and part of the group.
Encourage children to participate fully in activities, helping them to build confidence and develop new skills.
Work collaboratively with other volunteers to ensure the smooth running of the Drey.
Attend occasional training sessions and meetings to enhance your skills and knowledge of the Scouts UK program.
Ensure compliance with safeguarding and health & safety guidelines.

Requirements:

Enthusiasm for working with young children and supporting their growth and development.
Patience, kindness, and a positive attitude towards diversity and inclusion.
Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
A commitment to creating a safe and welcoming space for all children.
No prior experience required – just a willingness to get involved and learn.
A DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service) will be required.

Desirable Skills:

Experience working with young children in any capacity, such as in education, youth work, or childcare.
An interest in arts, crafts, games, or outdoor activities.
Familiarity with Scouts UK values or similar youth organisations.
